David Spinks (CEO, CMX Media) and Carrie Jones (Director of Content, CMX Media) joined Mary and Jason for this episode of Community Pulse. CMX was launched in 2014 as the community for community professionals. These days, through their summits, online community, content, and more, they work to advance the community industry, and give community professionals all of the resources they need to be successful.

The CMX Summits bring in voices from psychology and behavioral analysis, as well as non-profits, plus stories from the trenches of technology. The theme for CMX West 2015 was “Community is the Future of Business.” We talk through this idea, and what it means for the future of community professionals, as well as why the essence of community is at a tipping point right now. In the process, we highlight how to help companies understand what it’s like to build community on a professional level, how to set the standards for this relatively new role, and more.

Carrie is the Founding Partner and COO of CMX. She is passionate about building and participating in community wherever she goes. She has been building online community since she served as a “supermoderator” of a music forum when she was 15. She lives in Seattle, WA with her dog Bruce Wayne.

David Spinks

David Spinks is Founder and CEO of CMX, the hub for the community industry. Forever fascinated by how technology can bring people together, he’s been studying and building communities online and offline since he was 13 years old. Spinks also cofounded Feast (acquired) and BlogDash (still going), launched communities for companies like Zaarly, LeWeb, and Udemy, and has worked with hundreds of the world’s leading companies on community strategy.

Mary Thengvall is a connector of people at heart, both personally and professionally. She loves digging into the strategy of how to build and foster communities, and has been working with various developer communities for over 10 years. After several years of building community programs at O’Reilly Media, Chef Software, and SparkPost, she’s now consulting for companies looking to build out a Developer Relations strategy.
